“I still remember my first hot flash – like I was in a sauna covered in a wet blanket in the middle of a rainforest if the rainforest were in hell. It felt like I was burning up from the inside. Then there were the night sweats and brain fog and unexplained tears and a sudden desire to divorce my husband.I felt like I had gone mad. And this went on for years,” shares Ruby G.
This is exactly how too many women describe menopause. But it doesn’t have to be that way.
“I tried antidepressants and dabbled in supplements. At one point my doctor put me on Clonidine but I stopped taking it because the side effects were almost worse than the hot flashes. I joined some menopause Facebook groups. It’s true what they say, ‘misery loves company’ but it was in one those groups that a bunch of women were talking about how they found real relief with acupuncture. I immediately hopped on Google.”
Acupuncture is great for a myriad of health concerns including chronic pain, gastrointestinal issues, and nerve conditions. It also works wonders in treating hormonal imbalance which is precisely what’s behind a number of those unpleasant symptoms of menopause. In a 2011 study it was found that acupuncture works as well bioidentical hormone therapy for balancing hormones in menopausal women.
Which is especially encouraging news for women of the Grand Strand. While a majority of practitioners aren’t equipped to discuss menopause and its range of associated symptoms, much less recommend or perform substantive treatment, we are doing just that.
“Our personalized treatment plans address the individual,” shares Executive Director, Rebecca Rinn Powell. “This means that the woman complaining of hot flashes and vaginal dryness is not getting the same treatment as the woman who reports night sweats, insomnia and mood swings. Menopause is incredibly complicated and incredibly delicate because of its wide variety of symptoms and the stigma that surrounds it. That’s why I take such pride in my care team. Yes, our medicine is incredible, but it’s these talented women who are a sort of bridge that support our patients from start to finish while that medicine does what it’s designed to do, that’s our magic.”
Ruby shares more, “AIM felt more like a spa than a doctor’s office. It was a wonderful change of pace from everything I’d already been through. I’ve been a patient for almost six weeks and my hot flashes are finally tolerable and my mood has definitely improved, just ask my husband. My only wish is that every woman I know would come here and talk to AIM. If I could do it all over again I would’ve come here years ago, it’s been that life-changing.”
